About me

My name is Melissa and I love food. And drinks. Mostly the cheap stuff, but I won't turn down a fancy dinner. I am especially fond of potlucks. Send me an invitation, it's pretty likely I'll turn up.

You can contact me at forkthiszine@gmail.com.

Here are some random facts about me, which seems fitting for a page called "About me." Right?!

Born in Pennsylvania, I spent my early years running around the defunct dairy farm where my mother, aunt and uncles had grown up milking cows everyday before and after school. I climbed cherry trees to eat the plump ripe fruit straight from the source. I picked tiny wild strawberries from the hill above our pond, and found a secret grove of giant, lush red raspberries that I kept secret so I wouldn't have to share with anyone. Walking home from the bus stop, I would cut through our neighbor's corn field and pluck a few ears of sweet corn for dinner. There was food everywhere around me, and not just in cans and frozen packages. Of course this made me want to eat food from cans and frozen packages.

I have lived in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Missouri, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Florida, Washington State, Alaska, California and New York.

I worked in the restaurant industry for 10 years including: a doughnut shop, a family restaurant, a 24 hour diner, a pizza & sub shop, a crappy Italian place, a lovely Italian place, a snooty Italian place, the darkest restaurant in Los Angeles, a fine-dining tourist trap in Alaska, a bar & grill tourist trap in Alaska, a neighborhood breakfast joint, a European style cafe and a French restaurant where the owners made me pick up a basket of meringues that had spilled onto the floor to be sold instead of thrown out. I quit soon after.

I love cats. Especially my girl, Marta, who I've had since she was born in 1996.

I have six tattoos. The next one will be related to food in some way.
